Your One-Stop Guide to "Free" Web Space

No such thing as a "free" lunch or
Web Page?
When you see the table below, you'll know!
AAA's Stats:

America
Online the world's largest server & only ISP to provide free
space (2 MB per Screen Name & allowing up to five SNs) with no banners,
pop-ups or watermarks but THE big plus: short & uncomplicated URLs! DISS: you
gotta subscribe for about 20 clams a month but then Steve Case wasn't stupid. Newer AOL
versions now make it harder to stay out of hometown, though. |
Best bet if you're
not ready for a
paid domain!

Angelfire has 1.5 million members and allows for 2 MB of space. These two
are oldtimers.
Tripod has 2 million, providing 200 KB?!? (These
Lycos network communities both have pop-ups,
infuriating java imposed on each page to change the URL as it connects; arggghhhh!) |

Crosswinds seems a crisp deal-- unlimited space; browser uploads
or FTP (w/buggy updates some say) and natch you get a banner ad, but
thoughtfully, at the bottom of each page (the way geocities
was before their nasty pop-ups). Unlimited web-based e-mail, URLs are www.crosswinds.net/yoursite. Their
"About Us" page yielded an"Oops" pop-up if that tells you anything,
and there are also nasty reviews out there about 'em. |

Dreamwater 50MB space, guestbook, chat, Email, no FTP or image hotlinking;
URLs named (http://dreamwater.com/yourname or subdomain http://yourname.dreamwater.com)
unlimited bandwidth, hits; banner but no pop-ups! |

Freeservers Ad-supported service 20 MBs and "unlimited" E-mail

Geocities (now with Yahoo) This grandaddy
boasts most member pages & gives tons of space; Yahoo took over & installed the Ad
Square pop-up, but it was avoidable by adding a Geobanner. NOTE:
June, 2001 They reneged on the Geobanner, not allowing homesteaders to activate them and
forcing the pop-up. |

ZeroCatch or 0catch allows
100 Megs of storage, FTP but with file limitations; no mail, plus banner ad & pops. No
hotlinking and refuses to host sites used for storing only pictures. Very similar to the
now defunct tonofspace. |

XOOM/NBCi taught a real lesson by
unceremoniously discontinuing pages with little or no warning--
be wise & back-up your files, should this happen. We only hope Homestead
& Talk City were nicer.
Older hosts like Geocities & AOL reduce that risk but nothing is in stone on
the net.
One big advantage of going with a member
community (besides price)
rather than investing in your own domain,
your page can be found in "neighborhood" listings.
For more info on free space visit this guide full of reviews.
Free? Chuh, right!
You provide creative content (hard work, in exchange)
to the community so that the server can get their promotions & advertising
in YOUR FACE & Your Loyal Guests' Faces!
Some communities/memberships are more generous than others.
The most common drawbacks are pesky pop-ups and banners, plastered on your creation
and
java scripting the "benevolent" host injects into the browser address,
rendering the URL imperceptible.
Note: whatever community you decide on,
follow-through after providing your email address--
they'll confirm your necessary password.
