Promoting Your Web Page

Include Your URL - Put your web link (URL) address
on your e-mail, under your signature. Most mail programs enable you to set (see toolbar):
Tools/ Options/ Signature to automatically sign your mail and include your URL, phone
number and other contact options. If your page is a web résumé,
send hotlinks to potential employers in e-mail. Further, if you
have posted it to monster.com or other employment sites and they'll allow a URL, by all
means include it!
Tell Everyone - Worda' mouth can't be over-emphasized,
particularly on the Internet. Tell friends, family, anyone and everyone about your site.
Ever see the tv spot where a nerd with dot.com placard raised high, is out-running and
dodging the defense during a game? You don't have to go crazy but every time you let 'em
know you're around, you'll increase traffic (translation: awareness) of
your abilities-- individual or business.
Advertise Your URL - Include it on business cards; if you own a business
consider doing the same on flyers, menus, matchbooks, t-shirts, placemats, brochures,
phone directory ads or wherever your business is advertised. Do you have a restaurant?
Look for places on the web that advertise them your related skills or business. Is your
page a Web Résumé? Rather than submit to search engines, go here
for easy access to employment sites; including those you can post your résumé to, and
include the link (note: where they ask for your URL) to your more
impressive (with dynamic imaging) online presentation.
Get Featured - Apply to be featured; if you have a business, submit
your site for awards or specialized lists. If you write letters to editors (of a
fave magazine or publication) sign the letter and put the URL beneath your name.
Joining a member community for a personal page may
be the way to go, particularly for just one or two pages-- rather than investing
in your own domain so that your page can be found in "neighborhood"
listings. Did you see AAA's Free Web Page Guide?
Get Listed - Most 'Net surfers find sites they're looking for through
search engines or directories. To help users find your site, you should list in search engines. One easy way to get listed in several
for free (and multiple submitting) is through a site such as Add Me!
Describe your site. If you didn't create your page (if
AAA created your web résumé) simply right-click on your page and "View
Source" for your descriptions, keywords, etc. to include when registering your page
with search engines. Do you see keywords and description and meta tags in the header of
you HTML document? This helps search engines to index your page.
Submit Multiple Pages of Your Site - Some search engines will crawl and
index all pages linked from your index page. However, some may not, so it doesn't hurt to
submit other important pages of your site.
Don't Spam Index Your Site - Some people think repeating words in a
pages meta tags and/or title will get 'em listed higher in search engines. Many search
engines are configured to ignore such tactics, and even remove sites that do so.
