Tropical Storm Ernesto,
pre-Labor Day Weekend - 2006
OV, VA -- Ernesto was reduced to a tropical
storm Friday (9/1/06), so maybe six inches of rain came our way. On the Spit, power
blinked off two separate occasions, but the only resultant inconvenience was to repower
satellite dishes. This enabled another minor anoyance: politicians nauseated us on local
news channels, all "out in force" patting one another on the backs for good
work? There was Geo Allen, Thelma Drake, Paul Fraim, et al. hoping to be remembered for anything
in upcoming elections. You'd have thought it was Katrina II, with the way they were
gladhanding one another. Just watch how our property taxes soar, in mid-November
(post-elections).
Just before midnight Thursday, winds were easily gusting to 50
mph in "Downtown OV" while we gassed up at Citgo. It was difficult to open our
car doors due to the wind, across from OV Park. We sat inside while the pump did it's job,
to avoid rain lashings.
The top row of shots below, depict barely affected areas. The
waterline came up on the "Little Bay" beach and grass maybe midway (yawn). The
surprise was to see parked cars on Little Bay, up to their fenders in water. Assumptions
that recent drain and roadwork had improved 'hood flooding. In fact neighbors agreed
our street area looked worse than in really major storms of the past (sigh).
