Tom Kennedy's home, '53-'54
Hi RK, I saw your website on the Ocean View area - very informative and cool. I used to go to OV Park in the early 50's as a kid. My dad was stationed at the Navy base, and we lived off of Ocean View Ave & 25th near Little Creek. That was a wonderful time for a kid of 8. Couple blocks from the beach and just a short bus ride down to OV Park... Give me an email when you get a chance. --TK
Mom's name was Dorothy Kennedy. . . (Tom with his mother Dorothy, pictured at right). . . I went to Bayside Elementary [class photo below] school in Virginia Beach. By the way, my mom worked as a waitress at a bar and grill near the beach called The Triangle (left). Do you remember that place? I think it was near the old Holiday Inn. It was kinda' cool then but (25th & OV) probably got run down/torn down. Ha. I'd love to have more info on The Triangle or the beach.
[Dear Tom:
The old Holiday Inn (readers: don't confuse with the hotel chain) was owned by Mike Contrado & Joe Hoggard, Sr. RK's parents and their friends were 'regulars' there before Joe's son it took over as Ship's Cabin, in the 70's. We also received email from Joe's niece, Jennifer Hoggard at Tour 6 back in 1999, when there were only three OV Tours. Ship's Cabin was operated until recently by Terry 'Juice' Grape (current owner of Rosy's II) and also once owned The Blue Crab after original owners Jimmy & Patty Perry, on Pretty Lake Ave.
We know the Triangle was in the location of what was to become the Jolly Roger, the Brass Rail, later a Hardee's (the lot is vacant today) because we can see the Holiday Inn sign at left, taken from the photo at right, of your mom.
We are trying to find out about the ownership history of The Triangle. We wanna' know just who this Ocean View pioneering lady is/was. We also hope to get a bit more history of this renowned (due to being a major USN homeport) area frequented by those on leave, in East Ocean View. NOTE: Readers who can identify the lady at bottom/right, as 1950's owner of the Triangle; please write so we can let Tom know! --R K].
Keep up the good work
on the website. Looks like a lot of people had fond memories of OV Park and the area. I'll send a few more pics under separate email. Also, let me know if I can help with anything else. --TK
I went to Bayside, 1953-1954. The teacher's name was Marguente Grolos. Yes, she is in the back row, center. I am in the 4th. row, second from right in striped t-shirt.
Sincerely, Tom Kennedy
