Dear
Roberta: I'm positively thrilled to have spoken with you! You're a rock star
babe! Here's photos--
This is me with the Stanley
sisters at the old Lido Inn in late 1970. That's Ty Clark singing
between the "goils"! Stuie Davis was (hiding from the camera)
on bass, behind Pam on the left.
In 1975 I was on the road with Pascal's Rascals,
(named after restaurant/owner Pascal Arcese in Virginia Beach) with Rick Snyder,
who I met while he was doing a single at the OV Holiday Inn. He also had an all
night FM show on WNOR for a while. He did a great Cat Stevens, Gordon
Lightfoot, etc, gig; and we had four voices - a fine country rock band. (Eagles,
Firefall-type harmonies).
Me on the
gold top Les Paul (in high water purple bell bottoms) jamming
with Pete Rivera (drummer and lead singer of Rare Earth) in Charlotte, NC -
1971.
With Ricky T, Stuie, Felix on sax and me in
1969. The original By Appointment Only
at the White Sands Country Club included Ricky, Felix and Stu, but they
weren't part of the road herd or at the reunions. The original members that were in
both groups (that lasted for over 30 years) were Skip Leach, Gary
Smith, John Moore and me. They had three reunions
in 20 yrs without me --because no one knew how to contact me! They'd heard I was a
"mercenary on the Mexican border"!
A
recent pic of me ==>. I attended a reunion of By Appointment Only,
formed at the White Sands, in Florida --a year ago November, and I found that I
wasn't forgotten at all!
Just reading all of the old names and seeing the old pix
makes me sentimental to the point of tears. I can't tell you how moved I am by your
efforts. Thank you so much.
My Mom sold tickets at OV park's west gate and she lived for
her dinner break at Greenies' every night. She came across the street to Maddog's to hear me once, and because I was bopping along
with the music (while the others were stiff) she asked if I was on drugs!
--
"Uh, Yes, Mom, but that is incidental! I can't stand still
when the band is rockin'!"
I played at Maddogs, (with Bear and Six Pence
& Rye --the band was named by Peggy), the OV Park Dance Hall, the Whing Ding, the Squire's Club,
and other places I can't remember. The old trailer park where Shore Drive meets OV Ave
(right at the bridge) is where my parents lived, until they both passed. Theirs was the
trailer next to the road and the water. It was in such sad shape that it was demo'ed and
hauled away along with many family heirlooms and photos. So my baby pix went to the trash
dump.
I played with the earliest herd of Bear at Maddogs
with Billy on organ, Jeannie singing, Tommy (her ex) on drums before Stuie
joined and it became the horn band we all loved. I left town with the Executives in
1976 and based in Florida, moved to Los Angeles in 1979, came back to DE in 1985 --and
I've been here ever since.
I've been very fortunate to have several weekly columns
here, and The Wilmington News Journal used to give me 18 column inches about
hunting and conservation of resources, or the dredging/deepening of the DE and CHES bays
and the C&D canal.
Hope to hear from you soon, Jim Nance PS:
I'll start digging for pix!
Jim, did you know that Pascal Arcese was one of
the original owners of the Ebb Tide?
(See bottom row, right img-- Mentioning this because I'd give
my eye-teeth for some images of the old Ebb Tide) --rk
