Anonymous - Old Norfolk Memories!
"Roberta, I thought I was only feeding Stanley bits of
nostalgia. I am from a different time and a different place but enjoy the stories that
these tidbits germinate. It is nice that the Internet is way to record the 'recollection
of the past'. So often it is only told by word of mouth and bridges only a generation or
two... Ahh, those were the days. Joe Brown's Radio Gang, Saxy Dowel & Dot
singing 'Embraceable You' & 'Sleepytime Gal'... E.L. Lamberth was the Vice
Principal when Granby first opened in 1939; Mrs. Pretlow
was Librarian. Lemuel Games [re: Games Tri-Hi-Y] was the big dude then. What he
said about the school colors Blue, Gold & Silver: blue represents the school's
proximity to the blue waters of the Chesapeake Bay, silver & gold signify belief in an
ancient proverb, 'A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.' So
much for me writing in the third person and kidding around with Stan."--Anonymous
[Stanley Wyatt received images below from Anonymous and forwarded them to the Tour-- soon, we discovered they'd originated from the Norfolk Public Library site-- (at Google® to identify 'Mrs. Brown' & getting NPL); and also happily rediscovering NPL link of vintage Ocean View photos; which are mostly unidentified. Some are easy and obvious. Some you just wanna' know more about. If you can identify any, please email-- and please use file ID eg.: 'image 028' --We all remember our wonderful teachers]. NPL's lobby exhibit and historic photos (we've had 'em posted at the top of Tour 6 for several years now)... many a student and researcher is indebted to the wonderful folks who have assisted at the Sargeant Memorial Room at Kirn Library... during our college days and beyond -- just calling downtown and having a friendly, helpful voice, diligently verify your thesis!]. --RK
