I can't tell you how happy to have stumbled into your site... such a treat to find you. You've done a GREAT job. I wanted to add some info: "Also, Tommy (Bobby) Lassiter corrected us [on the] curb service drive-in ...called Park Grill". It was actually called Parkview Drive-In Restaurant & Grill. My father, James Mills, Sr. (who passed in 1984) owned it until 1963, when he sold & we moved to PA. Prior [to Parkview] he owned/ran Bayside Food Store at Chesapeake St & Blvd, across from Harry's Bar & Grill. I have fond memories, and would love a picture of Parkview or Bayside. I've several aerials that come close - but no cigar! I'd help my father by 'hopping the curb'  --waiting on the cars as they pulled in-- until I waited on the wrong car (a city employee gave my father a summons because I was about 12-13 at the time). In the 50's, he also had Dixie Grill, located on Pleasure House across from the Casino at Chicks's Beach. I remember going to the Rosele every Saturday (for a quarter), and riding the Rocket. I spent many allowances there! A house next to Parkiew, was occupied by the Winstead family - (6 kids or more) --Leonard Winstead (aka Bozo) used to divide his pool playing time between our restaurant and another on OV Ave. Parkview was where I learned to shoot pool. Another fond memory -- Mercury Skating Rink at Wards Corner (behind Exxon) - the sock hops were great! I have postcards & pics to share. Thanks... it has been very nostalgic!
Thanks! Pam Mills Nonaka Hampton, VA

Hi there, I live out here in Los Angeles, and the other night a local independent (KDOC) ran "The Death of Ocean View Park". I loved the movie, even though I missed the first 20 minutes-- do have a copy you'd be willing to sell or copy? Incidentally, I was a young kid living in Hampton at the time it was filmed, born in Newport News, & lived on the peninsula until Nov '79. I left the area in '93. I've been in L.A. for 3 years now, working as a comic book illustrator. Seein' that movie made me feel real nostalgic --remember the vintage footage of the Cayce center in the movie? Great stuff. Okay, thanks for your time and for providing a great source of Tidewater nostalgia, circa the Nickel Tour. Jon Los Angeles, CA

Thanks John, Robert may be able to help with a copy. --R K

Hi there. This is a long shot, but have you seen pictures of Wolfies Tavern? My Grandfather Joe Berman owned it from the 50's - 70's, I believe. Your site is great and brought back some good memories. I miss Doumars. My other Grandfather Frank Weisel owned a radio shop near Doumars. They took me in there as kid. I am also passing along your site to my grandparents who now live out in Sun City, Phoenix but were both born & raised in Norfolk. They grew up in Ocean View, and later moved to Newport Ave. Wolfies was located on Granby, downtown. Tell Albert [Doumar] when you see him, up north here (right outside of DC) they can't touch the barbecue they make. Last time in town (3 years ago) the Doumars were still behind the counter & remembered my Grandfather. Thanks for your time, Michael Weisel Gaithersburg, MD

Bobbie [aka RK], Your OV site brings back good memories of days at Granby and in Tidewater. Moore Travel Agency, operated by my Dad for 20 years or so, took over the spot where Perry's "8 Barbers" used to be (it became 15 Barbers) Wards
Corner--definitely an historic spot. It was a few doors south of the Suburban Theatre and Rose's Five & Dime --Crossroads Restaurant was another popular spot, taking up the middle of the parking lot-- (me and pals like Doug Rogers, William Wilkerson, and Mike Mann drank Cokes® and tried to act like boisterous Hemingways over imaginary cocktails. The normal customers, Ward Cleaver/Rotary Club types, looked at us with disdain. Recall the hobby store diagonal to Edelblutes & Barnett's, behind Hofheimers near an old diner-- maybe "Simpson's" (?). It was a hangout for Northsiders & Granby guys. Bucky Harrison & I used to buy Estes rockets there. Seeing a photo with you & Vicki Coulter, Nancy Nusbaum, etc. and reading of Patsy Watson, & the Nansemond --and old neighborhood friend, Puddy  --all those things sure bring up the past. Your site is a tremendous success, a virtual repository of memories. Congrats on a great job! I'm an old ElJo's & Sullivan's (madras shirts & sock garters) in Riverview --low-profile/Class of 66, guy-- transformed to bell-bottom & Namath mustache at University of South Carolina. I dodged the War, made a living after graduation in the training film business in Charlotte. For 25 years -- tech writer & instructional media creator in NC, TX, and FL. I'm now working for AT&T Business Services with a website development group as content manager.
PS: Sorry to hear about Mama's Kitchen. I'm reminded of the razing scene in Grapes of Wrath. I haven't been up lately, to see firsthand what's going on in OV, but see development here that makes me cringe. We too have "Walgreens/Eckerds Tomb on every block... horrendous new homes in place of palm forests". It's madness. -- Billy Moore Orlando, FL

Dear RK, found your site on OV-- I lived in Norfolk & went to Ocean View School when Lucy Mason Holt was in charge. My mother worked in the lunchroom (she was also the LR Mgr at Ocean Air and worked at Lakewood, too) --Rita Richardson-- she worked with Ellen Todd and others.  I'd love to hear from anyone who knew my mom --as she passed away April. Children who went to these schools were important to her-- she loved them all. I was in the first class to go to Mary Calcott. My sisters still live in OV. I remember going to Ocean View Park with my family on Sundays --watching the acts and riding the rides. We'd walk from Ocean Air Apartments though the golf course to the park. I remember the Easter Sundays and how everyone wore new Easter clothes to the park. I went to Granby with my sisters and brother. I lived in Norfolk until 1961 when I married a Navy man. I still remember great times with my family at OV. I'd like to hear from old friends in Norfolk. Thanks for the memories.

I came upon your website and think that it is very well done. You've a little bit about everything!! I know you put a lot of work into it and I enjoyed it. I've added a link from my website to yours! Mine is mostly genealogy stuff, but I think people who have ancestors and family from Norfolk will also enjoy your site. Actually, I was in a group about shopping in Norfolk; talking about old stores, like Smith & Welton, Center Shops, the Tea Room at Ames & Brownleys, and someone had posted a question about Harrison's Pier. So, I went see what I could find, and your site was the first and only one I went to. Got lost in the information! I shared your URL with that group and others have also enjoyed it.

I've been to your site before and think its wonderful. I did not attend school here; grew up outside Detroit. I moved here after college & started working for Billy Martin, Jr in 1994, as a graphic designer. I left in 2001 and moved to Dallas for an advertising job. I became so homesick for (OV & Hampton Roads)-- beach, friends, restaurants, fishing piers, etc, till I decided to sell my house and move back last year. I am thrilled to be back. My heart is here, my second home. I've been joked about living in Ocean View but I don't really care. I think it is Norfolk's as well as Virginia's best kept secret! Thank you for taking the time to put such a wonderful site together! Its obvious that Ocean View is dear to many peoples' hearts. Theresa Szewczul Norfolk

Since little we post is copyrighted, feel free to lift-- most online photos were donated to a public library, rather than academic. Because they're "people's history" the desire is for as many to have access as possible. Therefore, the more often they're lifted, the more honored. Peggy Haile-McPhillips' grant (from a Mr. Dudley Cooper) began the digitizing and the creation of pages. The Netlibrary was purchased by the State Library and is free to all Virginia citizens. I'll pass the word along to the LVA folks that you enjoy it. I enjoyed surfing your site! Lots of good historical information. With a fast internet connection for streaming videos, and RealPlayer®, click on a mayor's name to view the last seven mayors of the City of Norfolk. See clips of the OV trolley in the Vince Thomas interview. ODU made the video, and WHRO digitized & hosts. I was at a conference (nearly 10 years ago) and the speaker said, "Today, you sit at your reference desk and a student comes in asking for information on John F. Kennedy's 'ask not what your country can do for you...' speech. You send him out with a Xerox copy of the speech and a book. Tomorrow, a student is going to come in and ask the same question be handed a floppy disk. They are going to want you to download a video copy of the speech - get ready for it!" A collective GASP went through the audience. Now, it's almost here - and I'm still gasping.

First, I would like to say "thank you" for such a wonderful job on your "Nickel Tour" of Ocean View. It brought back many fond memories. I was born in the area in 1964, and we lived there (my father was in the Navy) for a few years. He retired and moved us to Pittsburgh PA, but we came back to Willoughby Spit for many years (during the mid & late 1970s). We rented a small white cottage in the 780 block of West Ocean View every summer. I remember great fishing and crabbing (much better than in South Florida!), as well as wonderful people, beaches and sights. Your web site brought that all back and more.... Raymond Rex FL

I miss old Ocean View. I was a military brat between 1964 & 1972 --(my USMC dad taught in CT but did active duty at Little Creek every summer). We lived in EOV, summers '64 - '70; moved to Larchmont ('71-'72). Was off to college & didn't return to Norfolk until stationed here in 1996 --went looking for Tidewater & it didn't exist! They've even "Judy Boonatized" O'Keefe Motel Apts. I know you can't go home again, but I feel bad for my kids because halcyon really describes those summers on the beach, pool hopping, night surfing, blowing up jellyfish, trading soda bottles for pinball at S&J Snackbar (two bottles equaled one 5¢ game; it was big bay side, between 1st & 3rd Bay. Other places along that strip were Thrill Hill (9th Bay) for skateboarding. 6th Bay was only "Little Thrill" but conveniently near the Tinee Giant & "Icees". What a world... Keep up the good work! Stan at work...I'm a retired mechanical engineer restoring a 1968 Bill Tripp Sailboat (hull no. 8) --lovely, fast in her day & still going to be a winner. I'm 72 & tell young guys these stories, & they think I'm nuts. Norfolk streetcars: we'd "pull trolleys" (stand & stop 'em while guys ran back to pull the "arm" down, which furnished power-- a great time). I went to Granby in 1943, lived in Talbot Park --oh those days --didn't lock our doors & the cars we had! We'd drive all over Sandbridge: Vic Doumar ("Purple Passion" & his '54 Ford Thunderbird-- the 1st T-bird in VA) --so cool smoking that pipe --& Harvey Mundon (his chartreuse Mercury convertible) & the Camtwisters (hot rod club). Bobby Cromwell (once Va Beach Mayor), Earl Caddell (Caddell Electric on Tidewater Dr). Let's go back, to Charles Driesell (later University of Maryland Basketball Coach). Red Ashburn now retired (USAF Colonel) --far from what we thought. We have photos (B&W) that will blow your mind. I'm enjoying this so much --so much to be added-- once at Sandbridge, we built a fire of driftwood & cooked hotdogs on coathangers. We ran out, so Harvey & Donald James saw another fire & went to see if they could buy some: it turned out bad -- approaching, one sailor shot Harv & then Donald. I grew up with the Doumars: my father's [Bellamy] ice cream plant was just across from Doumars. We've a picture of Red Ashburn & myself in his yard at Ocean Ave & Granby. Hey I just wanted to let you know I enjoyed your page about OV. Being an OV Rat and still kicking at 38. I remember alot of the places and buildings you mention. I miss old OV; attended school at OV Elementary, Northside Jr. & Granby, as did my older brothers. Growing up on Phillip Ave, near OV Elem. I ran all over & have the fondest memories of it. It was great to be a kid in OV then. My mother still has the house on Phillip and my wife's mother lives on First View a block away from Maple Manor. My oldest brother is Paul, next oldest is Nick and my youngest brother is Mike. We all went to OV Elementary, Northside and Granby --we all had our times running the streets in OV! OV will always be HOME! The OV bulldozing drives on: now Rosy's is looking down the barrel & the changes are amazing. The Army took me all over the world; I'm back 17 years later (Fort Monroe, currently assigned to 233D Military Police Detachment/MP Platoon Sergeant). And yes, I will retire right back in Ocean View!!! I could write a novel myself just about OV. Great job on the page --keep it up! Frank J. Lawson, Ft. Monroe

SkyrocketI stumbled on your site while searching for Ocean View. I lived there in 1953-1954 as a toddler. I have old photos and virtually no memories of that specific area. We returned in 1962 and lived on Warwick Ave until 1965. I attended Oceanair Elementary and a Girl Scout Camp in the vicinity (can't recall the name). My Mom was a Girl Scout leader there at Oceanair for my Jr. troop and she worked every summer at the camp in town. My maiden name was Jewell. I had two younger brothers, Steve & Jimmy, and a younger sister, Susie. I was in 5th grade in Sept. of 62. I had Mrs. DeMilt in 64/65 (but I remember Mr. Casey doing Science with us. We lived only one street from the beach. I'll see if I can get the older (1954) photos scanned. Well, it certainly is a small world! I am a science teacher now in Plymouth, MA. I remember falling in love with science in 7th grade due to the things we saw and did. I also loved dancing the Virginia Reel in gym class! It was great reminiscing about the old sites. You have a wonderful website.
Thanks for the memories. Sharon Jewell Jeffery East Taunton, MA

You're likely referring to Camp Apasus, Sharon. Dunno' when it moved from the City Park out to Forest Lawn (on Mason’s Creek) behind the cemetery. About 1960, the camp moved again at Forest Lawn --right on the creek, and we understand it is still in operation on the third site. Ask your mom if she remembers Camp Apasus Cookies! --R K

CAMP APASUS COOKIES - (no bake ) 2 C sugar; 1/2 C milk; 1/2 C cocoa; 1 stk margarine; 1/2 C peanut butter; 3 C quick oats; 1 tsp vanilla. Mix sugar, cocoa, milk and margarine in saucepan. Boil for one minute. Remove from heat. Stir in oats, peanut butter and vanilla. Drop from teaspoon onto waxed paper.

Hi RK, First thanks for this great site. Started school at Bayview when my family lived across from the beach on EOV Ave near the Chesapeake Street intersection. There was a Drug Store to swap an empty Coke bottle for a flavored "snow cone". New StationI remember going to school with Cappy Puma at Mary Calcott Elementry, Northside and I think Granby as well. Somewhere I have a 5th Grade Class picture with Cappy in it. Couldn't be more than one Cappy Puma, could there? I will email you a copy as soon as I locate it. I come through Norfolk about once a month and I'm always saddened by changes to OV and Wards Corner. Even sadder is Johnson's Square and surrounding stores. We also lived on Leicester and for many years on Haven Drive behind Calcott School. I remember someone named Tommy Tharp & a younger sister named Brenda --they used to "hang out" at the Pin Path Bowling at Wards Corner. I attended classes in the VFW at Ocean View in 1959 when the schools were closed. During that period I remember a Navy Plane which crashed on Granby Street across from the Telephone Building. Six people died, four in the plane and two young children in the two homes which were destroyed. Again, thanks for a GREAT SITE! Jim Johnson Granby Class 1961 currently in Richmond, VA

Hi Roberta, Your site is ripper. I just selected all the emails from the OV tour, pasted them to Word, pumped up the type size, printed them up at the firm and read them when I got home. Talked to Mike on Friday. He knows you, of course. First visited yesterday, the Tom Kennedy’s collection. He lives less than 10 miles from me. Seeing the roller coaster, the Rosele Theater, all the cars, was like a trip back in time for me. Once, a man decided to walk from some point, underwater, in his deep-sea diving rig, to another point in Chesapeake Bay, or maybe to OV Park, as a publicity stunt, or maybe to raise some cash. I recall post cards were sold to commemorate the event... Your site continues to bring me much pleasure. Frank CA
